    A perceptual hash function to store and retrieve large scale DNA sequences

    This paper proposes a novel approach for storing and retrieving massive DNA sequences.. The method is based on a perceptual hash function, commonly used to determine the similarity between digital images, that we adapted for DNA sequences. Perceptual hash function presented here is based on a Discrete Cosine Transform Sign Only (DCT-SO). Each nucleotide is encoded as a fixed gray level intensity pixel and the hash is calculated from its significant frequency characteristics. This results to a drastic data reduction between the sequence and the perceptual hash. Unlike cryptographic hash functions, perceptual hashes are not affected by "avalanche effect" and thus can be compared. The similarity distance between two hashes is estimated with the Hamming Distance, which is used to retrieve DNA sequences.     Outbreak of Shewanella algae and Shewanella putrefaciens infections caused by a shared measuring cup in a general surgery unit in Korea

    OBJECTIVE: To control an outbreak of Shewanella algae and S. putrefaciens infections by identifying the risk factors for infection and transmission. DESIGN: Matched case-control study. SETTING: A university-affiliated tertiary acute care hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea, with approximately 1,600 beds. PATIENTS: From June 20, 2003, to January 16, 2004, a total of 31 case patients with Shewanella colonization or infection and 62 control patients were enrolled in the study. INTERVENTIONS: Requirement to use single-use measuring cups and standard precautions (including hand washing before and after patient care and use of gloves). RESULTS: S. algae or S. putrefaciens was isolated from blood, for 9 (29.0%) of 31 patients who acquired one of the organisms; from bile, for 8 (25.8%), and from ascitic fluid, for 8 (25.8%). The attack rate of this outbreak was 5.8% (31 patients infected or colonized, of 534 potentially exposed on ward A) and the pathogenicity of the two species together was 77.4% (24 patients infected, of 31 who acquired the pathogens). The estimated incubation period for Shewanella acquisition was 3-49 days. Using logistic analysis, we identified the following risk factors: presence of external drainage catheters in the hepatobiliary system (odds ratio [OR], 20; P < .001), presence of hepatobiliary disease (OR, 6.4; P < .001), admission to the emergency department of the hospital (OR, 2.9; P = .039), wound classification of "contaminated" or "dirty or infected" (OR, 16.5; P = .012), an American Society of Anesthesiologists score of 3 or higher (OR, 8.0; P = .006), duration of stay in ward A (OR, 1.1; P < .001), and, for women, an age of 60-69 years (OR, 13.3; P = .028). A Shewanella isolate was recovered from the surface of a shared measuring cup, and 12 isolates of S. algae showed the same pulsed-field gel electrophoresis pattern. CONCLUSIONS: This Shewanella outbreak had a single-source origin and spread by contact transmission via a contaminated measuring cup. Shewanella species are emerging as potentially serious human pathogens in hospitals and could be included in hospital infection surveillance systems

    Haloperidol regulates the phosphorylation level of the MEK-ERK-p90RSK signal pathway via protein phosphatase 2A in the rat frontal cortex

    Haloperidol, a classical antipsychotic drug, affects the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway in the brain. However, findings are inconsistent and the mechanism by which haloperidol regulates ERK is poorly understood. Therefore, we examined the ERK pathway and the related protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) in detail after haloperidol administration. Haloperidol (0.5 and 1 mg/kg) induced biphasic changes in the phosphorylation level of mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK), ERK, and p90 ribosomal S6 kinase (p90RSK) without changing Raf-1 phosphorylation. Fifteen minutes after haloperidol administration, MEK-ERK-p90RSK phosphorylation increased, whilst PP2A activity decreased. At 60 min, the reverse was observed and the binding of PP2A to MEK and ERK increased. Higher dosages of haloperidol (2 and 4 mg/kg), affected neither MEK-ERK-p90RSK phosphorylation nor PP2A activity. Accordingly, PP2A regulates acute dose- and time-dependent changes in MEK-ERK-p90RSK phosphorylation after haloperidol treatment. These findings suggest the involvement of a dephosphorylating mechanism in the acute action of haloperidol

    A Case of Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar State Associated with Graves' Hyperthyroidism: A Case Report

    Hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS) is an acute complication mostly occurring in elderly type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Thyrotoxicosis causes dramatic increase of glycogen degradation and/or gluconeogenesis and enhances breakdown of triglycerides. Thus, in general, it augments glucose intolerance in diabetic patients. A 23-yr-old female patient with Graves' disease and type 2 DM, complying with methimazole and insulin injection, had symptoms of nausea, polyuria and generalized weakness. Her serum glucose and osmolarity were 32.7 mM/L, and 321 mosm/kg, respectively. Thyroid function tests revealed that she had more aggravated hyperthyroid status; 0.01 mU/L TSH and 2.78 pM/L free T3 (reference range, 0.17-4.05, 0.31-0.62, respectively) than when she was discharged two weeks before (0.12 mU/L TSH and 1.41 pM/L free T3). Being diagnosed as HHS and refractory Graves' hyperthyroidism, she was treated successfully with intravenous fluids, insulin and high doses of methimazole (90 mg daily).     Immunogenicity of influenza vaccination in patients with cancer receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors

    Among prospectively enrolled adult patients with cancer receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs; n = 46) or cytotoxic agents (n = 90), seroprotection and seroconversion rates after seasonal quadrivalent influenza vaccinations were higher with ICI than with cytotoxic chemotherapy. These results support annual influenza vaccinations for cancer patients receiving ICIs.

    Lobjectif des bases de données de champs continus est la représentation des phénomènes continus (météorologie, géologie, pollution, etc..). Nous proposons une méthode dindexation pour le traitement efficace des requêtes par valeurs dans une grand base de données de champs. Ces requêtes sont basées sur la condition dune valeur de champ, telles que Quelles sont les régions où la température est inférieure à 30° ? . Pour cela, nous proposons un nouveau concept de sous-champ. Nous divisons un espace en plusieurs sous-champs pour que toutes les valeurs explicites ou implicites dans un sous-champ soient proches dans le domaine de valeur défini. Ainsi, les intervalles des sous-champs peuvent être indexés par une méthode existante d\u27indexation dintervalles. Nous présentons deux nouvelles méthodes d\u27implémentation de sous-champs : les méthodes "Interval Quadtree" et "I-Hilbert". La méthode "I-Hilbert" est issue de la réflexion sur lamélioration de la méthode "Interval Quadtree" Par ailleurs, nous nous intéressons à la visualisation de la temporalité des données. Afin de mieux comprendre et analyser des données selon le temps, il est important de représenter leur évolution temporelle. Du point de vue thématique applicative, nous avons travaillé sur un SIG sonore urbain. Après une étude des outils existants, nous avons adopté des techniques danimation pour représenter l\u27évolution temporelle du son. Utiliser une carte animée comme outil d\u27exploration des données nécessite la spécification dune carte animée interactive permettant aux utilisateurs de contrôler non seulement l\u27affichage mais aussi la génération de lanimation. Afin de réaliser une telle carte animée, nous proposons des paramètres contrôlant la génération des scènes danimation et un contrôleur interactif de laffichage des animations. Ces spécifications dune carte animée interactive ont été validées dans un prototype développé sous MapInfo et VisualBasic
